Amounts of protein needed to build muscle?

What are the recommended amounts of protein needed to build muscle? I've heard different answers to this and I just want to make sure I'm not over-doing it. I want to get bigger and put on muscle but I also want to be healthy.

I typically shoot for 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

Thats kinda hard to be healthy and put on as much muscle as us bodybuilders, true 1.5 grams of protien will help no end in gaining size but remeber also when eatting that much that an inch on the chest also means 2 inchs on the waist so best to do 6 months eatting 1.5 grams the for four months live just off 1 gram and thats the part where you can do the cardio to lower any extra body fat you will have got

hope that helps

That's a debate that will go on forever. You got bodybuilders like Skip Lacour that will consume 1 to 1.5 grams per pound of body weight. Then, you got guys like Mike Mentzer who didn't ever take protein shakes, except when he was dieting and his calories were lower than 1500 per day (lower than that supposed to be to low and unhealthy to your body), so he made up by taking protein shakes. I personally take a shake before and one after training, when your body really needs it.
